Resume Mistakes Freshers Should Avoid

Common first-resume problems and simple fixes, from vague objectives to unreadable designs.

If you have little or no work experience, your resume still has plenty to say. These mistakes get in the way.

1. A vague objective

"Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation" fits everyone and tells nothing. Replace it with two lines: your course, your strongest skills and the kind of role you want.

2. Listing duties instead of what you made

For projects and internships, say what you built or improved and with which tools. "Built a student attendance app using React and Firebase" is better than "worked on a project".

3. A cluttered design

Photos, progress bars for skills, many colours and columns look busy and can confuse software. A clean single-column page is safer.

4. Skill lists with no proof

A long list of tools you used once invites hard questions. List what you are comfortable discussing, and back the main ones with a project or course.

5. Typos and inconsistent formatting

Check spelling, dates and capital letters. Read it aloud and ask a friend to read it too.

6. An unprofessional email address

Use a simple address based on your name. Add a working phone number and, if you have them, a LinkedIn profile or portfolio link.

7. Too long

One page is enough at this stage. Leave out school marks from early years unless asked.

8. Sending the same file everywhere

Adjust the order of skills and projects to match the job. It takes ten minutes and shows you read the posting.
