Behavioural questions (STAR)

Questions that start with "Tell me about a time when…".

1. Tell me about a time you faced a difficult deadline.

How to answer: Use STAR: the Situation, your Task, the Action you took and the Result. Spend most of your time on what you did and what changed.

2. Describe a time you disagreed with a teammate.

How to answer: Show that you listened, kept it about the work and found a way forward. Never blame the other person.

3. Tell me about a mistake you made.

How to answer: Own it quickly, explain what you did to fix it and what you do differently now. Interviewers want honesty and learning.

4. Give an example of when you took the lead.

How to answer: You do not need a manager title. A group project, a college event or helping a new colleague all work if you show initiative and the outcome.

5. Tell me about a time you had to learn something quickly.

How to answer: Describe how you broke the task down, where you got help and how you checked your work. End with what you can do now that you could not before.

6. Describe a time you handled pressure or a difficult customer.

How to answer: Stay calm in the story: what you noticed, what you said or did and how it ended. A fair outcome counts, even if it was not perfect.

Use these as a guide and answer from your own real experience. Never invent examples. See our disclaimer.
